Marlow Centre Ladies’ Club

September 2010

The Marlow Centre Ladies Club has already enjoyed some informative speakers, as well as two wonderful outings.

First outing of the year was to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. This organisation was formed in 1982 and relies entirely on donations and fund raising.  After a most enjoyable lunch the ladies met fund raiser Fiona and her wonderful dog Alice. Alice is a ‘Fallen Angel ‘which means she didn’t quite make it as a working dog so now lives with Fiona and works at the centre. Alice gave an enthralling demonstration, alerting her owner to many sounds, such as  the morning alarm clock, the telephone and someone knocking at the door, things that those of us with hearing take for granted. She may have been a fallen angel but everyone fell in love with Alice!

The next trip was some-thing very special, with members and guests visiting Wellington Barracks to be entertained in the Officers Mess and watch the Grenadier Guards as they prepared to form the new guard at Buckingham Palace. Captain of the Guard, Tom, explained the procedure on the parade ground and the guards looked spectacular in their impressive red tunics and bearskins. Tom also explained that the Grenadier Guards do not wear their uniforms in torrential rain as each replacement costs £350.

Before leaving to take up his  duties, Tom was escorted  to the conductor of the band who presented him with six pieces of music from which he had to make his choice for the day. He then took up his position as Captain of the Guard and proceeded through the main gates towards Buckingham Palace. After this amazing experience, the ladies were entertained with champagne and a buffet lunch.

Future events include a family pig roast, a visit to Kew Gardens, a night at the Mill at Sonning Supper Theatre and, ending the year, a Murder Mystery evening.

Guest speaker meetings are held in The Pugin Rooms, St Peter’s Church, Marlow (opposite the Marlow Masonic Centre). Anyone interested in joining or who would just like more information please contact chairman Marie Moody on 01628 530990.
