Two students from the University of Buckingham have joined Freemasonry in a pioneering UGLE scheme. Mr Oyeniyi Sodipo and Mr Ade Sangodoyin joined Grenville Lodge No. 1787 at a meeting attended by the Assistant Grand Master, RW Bro. David Williamson and the PGM, RW Bro. Gordon Robertson at Buckingham on 11th April 2012.
Grenville Lodge is the first in Buckinghamshire to be admitted to Freemasonry’s national Universities Scheme, which aims to instil masonic principles of friendship, decency, and charity in university students. More than 50 other lodges have already joined the project, since it was started in 2005.
The Assistant Grand Master has been President of the Universities Scheme since its inception and hopes that university members will be able to gain the same inspiration, fulfilment and enjoyment from Freemasonry as the rest of its members. The objective of the Scheme is ‘to establish and/or enhance arrangements and opportunities for undergraduates and other university members to enjoy Freemasonry’.
Buckingham is the only private university in the United Kingdom and was opened in 1973. It was the first UK university to condense the academic content of a standard 3-year degree into a 2-year programme, running over four terms per year and 80% of its students come from overseas, although many stay in England to work or gain post graduate qualifications. It is hoped that the Scheme will also further enhance the link between the Lodge, the University, the Province and Freemasonry in general.
W. Bro Peter Moody, AsstProvGM responsible for the Scheme in Buckinghamshire said “the candidates are great examples of a new generation of Freemasons coming forward, who believe that our ancient traditions of friendship, decency, and charity, still resonate in today’s world.”
RW Bro. Gordon Robertson said: “I am proud that Grenville Lodge has become the first Buckinghamshire Lodge to join this pioneering scheme. “All the members are teaching masonic principles to a new age group which clearly realises that strong values are at the heart of every successful country or society.”
