BUCKINGHAMSHIRE ASSOCIATION FOR MASONIC RESEARCH

The Buckinghamshire Association for Masonic Research (known as the BAMR) exists to stimulate and develop an active interest in Freemasonry and a greater understanding of our order in Buckinghamshire and beyond.

The aims and objectives of the BAMR are to:

Promote and undertake study and research into matters relating to Freemasonry in general and the Province of Buckinghamshire in particular.

Record and make available to all interested parties the transactions of the Association (and those of the Bucks Lodge for Masonic Research (BLMR) No 9585 prior to its closure in April 2009).

Make available a service to provide all Freemasons in the Province of Buckinghamshire and subscribing members of the Association with Masonic knowledge and information.

Maintain a central register of research papers compiled by members of the Association and the now closed BLMR.

The BAMR holds an informal Members' Papers Meeting, normally on the first Saturday in February, at the Masonic Hall in Ripon Street, Aylesbury. The BAMR also promotes and administers the Burnham Lecture on behalf of the Provincial Executive.

Brethren of the Association are available to give talks, lectures, lead discussions etc., at any Lodge, Lodge of Instruction or study group.   Applications for such should be made to the BAMR Secretary.

All Master Masons in good standing are eligible for membership of the BAMR.

The Burnham Lecture

The Burnham Lecture is an annual lecture within the Province endorsed by the Provincial Executive and promoted by the Bucks Association for Masonic Research (BAMR). The Burnham Lecture reflects the unique historical link of the members of the Burnham family as Provincial Grand Masters of Buckinghamshire and their continuing encouragement and sponsorship of Masonic Research in the Province.

The Provincial Executive and the Committee of the BAMR choose the topic of each annual lecture.   The lecture topics are of such a nature as to encourage the presentation of papers and new research by Freemasons who may not have previously published any research or articles on Freemasonry in general and the Province of Buckinghamshire in particular. These may include any aspects of the history, symbolism and philosophy of Freemasonry.

The designated Burnham Lecturer is announced at the Annual Meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Buckinghamshire and his name recorded in the Provincial Directory. He is expected to give three official Lectures within his appointment which will initially be for two years. The Lectures will be evenly distributed between the North, South and Centre of the Province.

Lodges are encouraged to host an Official Lecture and applications for this must be made in writing to the Provincial Grand Secretary. Unofficial Lectures may be given subsequent to the designated year and applications for these may be made after the official period direct to the BAMR Secretary

It is the Provincial Grand Master’s wish that a Charity should benefit from the Lecturers' visit and a proportion of any Raffle or other fund raising will divided between the BAMR Library Fund and a charity (or charities) nominated by the host Lodge.
